CD-ROM DISAPPOINTING
3 / 5.0
I was completely excited to get my copy of Davis's Drug Guide in the mail today, complete with CD-ROM and PDA download. And that's where it ends. I pull out the CD-ROM, and discover it's not compatible with my MacBook Pro. That means no software or PDA download for me. Macs are becoming more popular than ever, and F.A. Davis needs to get with the program and make a CD-ROM compatible with Mac.

Excellent Drug Book
5 / 5.0
This book was very useful in nursing school. It has a CD-rom with a downloadable drug guide. I was able to cut and paste drug information from it and did not have to retype information for drug sheets.

Amazon ripped me off
3 / 5.0
The book is great but Amazon.com ripped me off. I had the book 2 weeks before I realized that it was supposed to come with a CD. I should have known something was wrong when I had all the black fingerprints along the binder. Waited almost 2 weeks to get my book, 2 weeks later discovered they sent me a "new" book without the advertised CD.

Very good book
5 / 5.0
It is really good book. I would recommend it to enyone whose major is Nursing or Pharmocology.

Drug Guide
5 / 5.0
This book is very handy. It has all of the drugs that the Med deck has except is much easier and faster to use. Would recommend this product.

Editorial Review
Once in a generation a novel comes along that taps a vein of universal human experience, resonating with readers of all ages. THE LOVELY BONES is such a book -- a #1 bestseller celebrated at once for its artistry, for its luminous clarity of emotion, and for its astonishing power to lay claim to the hearts of millions of readers around the world.

"My name was Salmon, like the fish; first name, Susie. I was fourteen when I was murdered on December 6, 1973."

So begins the story of Susie Salmon, who is adjusting to her new home in heaven, a place that is not at all what she expected, even as she is watching life on earth continue without her -- her friends trading rumors about her disappearance, her killer trying to cover his tracks, her grief-stricken family unraveling. Out of unspeakable tragedy and loss, THE LOVELY BONES succeeds, miraculously, in building a tale filled with hope, humor, suspense, even joy.

The major motion picture version of THE LOVELY BONES, directed by Peter Jackson and starring Rachel Weisz, Susan Sarandon, Mark Wahlberg, Stanley Tucci, and Saoirse Ronan is scheduled for release on December 11, 2009.

Editorial Review
On her way home from school on a snowy December day in 1973, 14-year-old Susie Salmon ("like the fish") is lured into a makeshift underground den in a cornfield and brutally raped and murdered, the latest victim of a serial killer--the man she knew as her neighbor, Mr. Harvey.

Alice Sebold's haunting and heartbreaking debut novel, The Lovely Bones, unfolds from heaven, where "life is a perpetual yesterday" and where Susie narrates and keeps watch over her grieving family and friends, as well as her brazen killer and the sad detective working on her case. As Sebold fashions it, everyone has his or her own version of heaven. Susie's resembles the athletic fields and landscape of a suburban high school: a heaven of her "simplest dreams," where "there were no teachers.... We never had to go inside except for art class.... The boys did not pinch our backsides or tell us we smelled; our textbooks were Seventeen and Glamour and Vogue."

The Lovely Bones works as an odd yet affecting coming-of-age story. Susie struggles to accept her death while still clinging to the lost world of the living, following her family's dramas over the years like an episode of My So-Called Afterlife. Her family disintegrates in their grief: her father becomes determined to find her killer, her mother withdraws, her little brother Buckley attempts to make sense of the new hole in his family, and her younger sister Lindsey moves through the milestone events of her teenage and young adult years with Susie riding spiritual shotgun. Random acts and missed opportunities run throughout the book--Susie recalls her sole kiss with a boy on Earth as "like an accident--a beautiful gasoline rainbow." Though sentimental at times, The Lovely Bones is a moving exploration of loss and mourning that ultimately puts its faith in the living and that is made even more powerful by a cast of convincing characters. Sebold orchestrates a big finish, and though things tend to wrap up a little too well for everyone in the end, one can only imagine (or hope) that heaven is indeed a place filled with such happy endings. --Brad Thomas Parsons

Riveting read
5 / 5.0
I really wanted to read this book before I saw the movie - I always want to read without the movie mucking up my vision of the author's words.

What a great read! Having the dead girl narrate the story in such matter of fact tones... It made the horrible details of her death all the more horrible, and yet bearable. Hers was the perfect voice - a calm constant throughout.

Seeing the whole family struggle through their loss and grief was all too real and painful. I cried many times, as Susie detailed how she and her loved ones learned to deal with the terrible hole left in all their lives. Different in size and shape for each family member, but inescapable. It is not a perfect family and they are not perfect people. But they are good people, in spite of their stumbles.

I hope the movie can do justice to the story...

Tough to get through
1 / 5.0
After hearing all of the rave reviews I was totally disappointed in this book. I forced myself to read the first half, the second half got a little better, but it was still a chore to pick it up. I had read that it was about a murdered girl who was trying to help her father find her body. Not once in the book do I remember that happening. Not an exciting ending either. Just blah. I can't believe they are making a movie out of it. Good luck with that!

Seriously? Someone thought this would make a good movie?
1 / 5.0
This book starts out interestingly enough, but fizzles into a tedious account of the boring goings-on of every minor character, with no resolution to speak of. The story left me feeling like I'd had cotton balls for dinner: still hungry, and confused about why I wasted so much time on something so purposeless.

I can't give you my reason for disliking this book without spoiling the ending, but let's just say that if I were going to write a parody of The Lovely Bones, I would leave the last 100 pages completely blank.

Not what I expected
3 / 5.0
The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold was a little bit of a let-down for me. The narrator is a 14 year old girl named Susie Salmon. The story begins with Susie getting raped by her neighbor on her way home from school. This scene is a little difficult to read, as it does go into detail and might be a touchy subject for most people. (especially mothers) Her family is devastated and begin to fall apart. Her dad becomes obsessed with discovering the secret behind Susie's death because the police have failed to do so. Her mom slowly falls away from the family, leading her to regret some decisions she makes in an attempt to cope with the sudden tragedy. Susie's sister eventually takes sides with her dad and helps him in discovering who Susie's killer is. Mr. Harvey, the villain, struggles at some parts trying to cover up his tracks. The point of view is actually Susie's herself. She is watching down on her family and friends from Heaven (or the spaces in between, she wasn't sure of where she was). It is an interesting way of portraying the story because you know things the characters don't, and only share these secrets with the girl who was murdered.

For the most part of the story, I was involved and did enjoy it. However, I don't believe that this book deserved all the hype it got. Many of my friends were telling me "You have to read this!!!" So, I listened. I didn't regret reading it, I do recommend it, just advise you not to expect it to be as good as it was named.

For me, the ending was the biggest let down. The story sets up some big climatic scene at the end of the book. yea.. didn't happen. I was very disappointed with the ending-it was very odd, and not at all what I thought would happen. (not in a good way.) If the ending had been more climatic I feel like I wouldn't have such a negative attitude to the book.

I LOVE THIS BOOK!
5 / 5.0
At first I wasnt sure if I would even want to finish it. But I continued to read and am VERY thankful I did so. I LOVE THIS BOOK!

Editorial Review
In this disquieting cyber thriller, Joseph Menn takes readers into the murky hacker underground, traveling the globe from San Francisco to Costa Rica and London to Russia. His guides are California surfer and computer whiz Barrett Lyon and a fearless British high-tech agent. Through these heroes, Menn shows the evolution of cyber-crime from small-time thieving to sophisticated, organized gangs, who began by attacking corporate websites but increasingly steal financial data from consumers and defense secrets from governments. Using unprecedented access to Mob businesses and Russian officials, the book reveals how top criminals earned protection from the Russian government.

Fatal System Error penetrates both the Russian cyber-mob and La Cosa Nostra as the two fight over the Internet’s massive spoils. The cloak-and-dagger adventure shows why cyber-crime is much worse than you thought―and why the Internet might not survive.

Overly Vague, Limited Value
2 / 5.0
Author Menn says cybercrime is no longer the domain of small-time thieves - it has been taken up by sophisticated gangs attacking corporate websites and stealing consumer financial data. His book takes readers into both Russian and American organized hacker groups, and en route gives some idea of the difficulties involved in curtailing their activities. In fact, Menn claims less than 1% of the perpetrators are caught - mostly dumb teens bragging on Internet relay chat rooms. The general topic (Internet 'mischief') is an important one, however, Menn focuses too much on detailing the tracking and foiling of a few perpetrators and not enough on a useful explanation of their overall approaches or the credibility of their possible threats. Dated footnotes and broken links from Menn's website are not much assistance either.

Menn first covers the problems U.S. off-shore gambling sites encountered with extortion demands associated with 'denial of service attacks.' The most common method involves overloading the target machine with bogus communications requests so that it cannot respond to legitimate customers, or responds so slowly as to be effectively unavailable. Mechanisms include taking remote control of hundreds or thousands of computers and directing them at the victim for either denial of service or with spamming. Unfortunately, Menn does not explain how these attacks are overcome or diverted - hardly a matter of security because any good hacker already knows. Regardless, those failing to pay the ransom (eg. $30,000) are likely to have their server rendered inoperable; unfortunately, per Menn, the costs of overcoming such attacks require time and considerable money. Other Internet gambling mischief includes past-posting betting, and rigged poker games.

Menn believes that American individuals and corporations lost $1 trillion to Internet mischief in 2009. Phishing, false credit-card charges, are other significant consumer problems. Corporations and governments also have to worry about theft of documents and Trojans that monitor their Internet activities and files. Menn claims that retailers usually take the 'hit' for credit-card fraud, and thus issuers make less-than-adequate prevention efforts; however, he offers no credible explanation for this claim. China, Russia, and Eastern European countries are the main sources of computer crime.

Ending, Menn offers suggestions for improving Internet security - eg. credit-card issuers providing tokens with passwords that change every minute, but fails to explain how this would work.

Bottom-Line: "Fatal System Error" is overly vague and of limited value.

Fantastic Thriller - Too real
4 / 5.0
Working in the computer security industry we see these type of criminal acts on a daily basis. However, what we see is a microcosm of what Mr. Menn writes about in this great work. Tying all the ends together into a readable format that is literally a international crime thriller brings to light the vast dangers to our financial data and it's uses.

I'd recommend this book for ANYONE that uses the internet.

Why should the Kindle version be only 90 cents cheaper than the hardcover? Stop gouging and maybe a few more will buy.

Giving five stars to offset the idiot who used the review feature to whine about price. Will come back with a proper review when finished with the book.

Too expensive.

This should be no more than ten bucks. Fifteen bucks for an ebook is rude.

Best Textbook I've Ever Used
5 / 5.0
When it comes to textbooks, they are normally boring and always overpriced! When I purchased "Realms, Regions and Concepts" for my college geography class, I was pleasantly surprised. This book is easy to read and the maps and illustrations are both relevant and interesting. I thorougly enjoyed using this textbook and would recommend it to anyone interested in learning more about the world's geo-political make-up. Even though my class is long over, I know that I will crack this book open again from time to time, just for reading pleasure. The accompanying internet study resources are also top-notch.

Editorial Review
Brought thoroughly up-to-date-with the latest information on everything from diapering to daycare, from midwifery to hospital "birthing rooms," from postpartum nutrition to infant development-THE BABY BOOK remains the one must-have resource for today's new parents.

In this perennially bestselling and encyclopedic guide, Dr. Bill and Martha Sears draw from their vast experience both as medical professionals and as parents to provide authoritative, comprehensive information on virtually every aspect of infant care. THE BABY BOOK focuses on the essential needs of babies-eating, sleeping, development, health, and comfort-as it addresses the questions of greatest concern to parents today.

Editorial Review
In their excellent (and hefty) resource guide, The Baby Book, attachment parenting specialists William Sears and Martha Sears have provided new parents with their approach to every aspect of baby care basics, from newborns to toddlers. Attachment parenting is a gentle, reasonable approach to parenting that stresses bonding with your baby, responding to her cues, breastfeeding, "wearing" your baby, and sharing sleep with your child. For those parents who worry about negative effects of this attention, the Sears say, "Spoiling is what happens when you leave something (or some person) alone on the shelf--it spoils."

Good Book
3 / 5.0
This book has been helpful, but I wish I would have gotton one more like the pregnancy books that I got were you read from week to week. I find it a little overwhelming with all the information. It is a good reference when you have a specific question.

Great Book!
4 / 5.0
I purchased this book before my son was born simply because of good reviews on amazon.com. Without a doubt I made a right decision. I really like Dr. Sears' positive approaches toward all the common concerns and problems all new moms would experience. Every time I feel "maybe I am doing wrong "or I'm confused about what I am supposed to do under certain situation, I just opened the book and find the solutions. Usually I am not doing anything wrong. As long as I follow my heart Dr.Sears support me with good evidence in the book. My mother-in-low always tells me what I should do and how my baby who is now 6 month old is manipulating me. She promotes "Cry it Out" method since that's what she used for her kids. I tried the method a couple of times. The outcome was really bad. Both me and baby were so tired, felt extremely bad and were very unhappy all day. Now I have every confident that Dr Sears' AP method is right for my family. Thanks to this book my son is physically and mentally healthy and a very happy baby. He laughs more than cries every day. I definitely recommend this book. Starting to read it before you give birth is best!

Forget the "What To Expect" Books
5 / 5.0
This is by far the best and most comprehensive guide to infant care on the market. The "What to Expect" series, although popular, cannot hold a candle to the information in this book. I highly suggest ordering a copy to browse during pregnancy, but store it somewhere easily accessible during your child's first year as you will find yourself looking up all sorts of topics from sleep to diet to developmental milestones in this handy reference guide. Even to the mom that feels she knows all there is to know about a new baby, its amazing how comforting a guide like this can be in those first few weeks of overwhelming new questions and concerns. I plan to give a copy of this book at every baby shower from now on.

the encyclopedia of baby books
5 / 5.0
I had no idea how huge this book would be. It contains a wealth of information. It's not the type of book I am going to sit down and read cover-to-cover but I will definitely refer to specific chapters on a regular basis. No matter what your views are on breastfeeding, co-sleeping, disciplining, etc, Dr. Sears offers compassionate, easy to understand explanations and advice on child-rearing.

Lives on the night stand
4 / 5.0
Great reference book! My wife and I have reached for it many times late at night when various issues have risen with our children.
