Editorial Review
Goldman's classic tale of high adventure, swashbuckling excitement and good-natured silliness. Abridged. 3 CDs.

Editorial Review
The Princess Bride is a true fantasy classic. William Goldman describes it as a "good parts version" of "S. Morgenstern's Classic Tale of True Love and High Adventure." Morgenstern's original was filled with details of Florinese history, court etiquette, and Mrs. Morgenstern's mostly complimentary views of the text. Much admired by academics, the "Classic Tale" nonetheless obscured what Mr. Goldman feels is a story that has everything: "Fencing. Fighting. Torture. Poison. True love. Hate. Revenge. Giants. Hunters. Bad men. Good men. Beautifulest ladies. Snakes. Spiders. Beasts of all natures and descriptions. Pain. Death. Brave men. Coward men. Strongest men. Chases. Escapes. Lies. Truths. Passion. Miracles."

Goldman frames the fairy tale with an "autobiographical" story: his father, who came from Florin, abridged the book as he read it to his son. Now, Goldman is publishing an abridged version, interspersed with comments on the parts he cut out.

Is The Princess Bride a critique of classics like Ivanhoe and The Three Musketeers, that smother a ripping yarn under elaborate prose? A wry look at the differences between fairy tales and real life? Simply a funny, frenetic adventure? No matter how you read it, you'll put it on your "keeper" shelf. --Nona Vero

Morgenstern is not real
4 / 5.0
It took me awhile to find the "right" version of the Princess Bride. The description of "Princess Bride" tells of William Goldman abridging the original by S Morgenstern. I was constantly confused with Goldman's talk of Guilder and Florin and Morgenstern's original version. But, there is no Morgenstern! There are no countries of Guilder and Florin. (But Goldman's commentary at the end talk about him visiting Florin and the real Cliff's of Insanity). It is all part of Goldman's imagination. The preface and commentary talk about Goldman's struggle with Morgenstern's estate is also made up. Everything about the book's publication and legal battles are fictional. I wish I would have know that before I read the book, preface and all. It would have made more sense, but discovering this after the fact, I found it quite dissapointing.

As to the actual story: I grew up quoting the Princess Bride movie. I have most of it memorized. So, it was quite fun to relive the story. Goldman also wrote the screenplay for the movie, so it follows the book very faithfully. Here are some of my favorite quotes from the movie.

Vizzini: "Fool. You fell victim to one of the classic blunders. The most famous is 'Never get incolved in a land war in Asia,' but only slightly less well know in this: 'Never go in against a Sicilian when death is on the line.'"

Classic.

"Inconcievable". "You keep using that word! I don't think it means what you think it does."

"Hello, my name is Inigo Montoya (btw it took me forever as a child to learn how to pronounce that); you killed my father; prepare to die."

The book did explain in more detail the background of Inigo and his father's death. The part about Wesley's torture is pretty grusome, so skip that part. Goldman's commentary is also quite boring and contains lots of swearing.

This version contained a preface and Goldman's abridgement of the first chapter of the sequel "Buttercup's Baby". I did not like it at all. Btw, there is no sequel. Goldman never got past the first chapter. And remember Morgenstern is fictional, so the abridgement is not an abridgement but Goldman's original work.

Highly Recommended!
5 / 5.0
This is an amazing book with a little bit of everything; swordfights, hand-to-hand combat, romance, mystery, adventure, true love, chases, torture, revenge, magic, death (and the mostly dead), humor, bravery and cowardice.

It can get a little wordy at times, but mostly it does serve to move the story along. This is different than the movie, so don't expect a word-for-word printed version of the movie. The book does do a better job of fleshing out the characters.

The book starts with an introduction meant to lead the reader into thinking this is an abridged version of the childhood story the author heard from his father. The book is full of parts that have been "cut" from the story for our reading enjoyment. It can sometimes get a little confusing to keep straight, and occasionally the extra bits can distract from the flow of the story, but overall, the whole package makes for a very fun and entertaining read.

Pass, the movie has the good parts
3 / 5.0
I had been wanting to read this book for years. I guess it was a big buildup that led to me be disappointed. I recommend if you want to read this book, skip over everything written in italics. Goldman should have just written his own story. The whole Morgenstern history and museum and all that was a major distraction.

Classic

I loved watching this movie when I was younger and when I read the book I thought of that movie! Great book!

after all the wait...the movie was better
3 / 5.0
For the first time ever, I feel the movie was better. The author interrupts constantly with comments that bring you out of the story and it is not as "charming" as it plays out on the screen. Did not make it till the end--despite that this movie was a "cult classic" for my generation/age group.

Editorial Review
With a compassionate realism and narrative sweep that recall the work of Charles Dickens, this magnificent novel captures all the cruelty and corruption, dignity and heroism, of India. The time is 1975. The place is an unnamed city by the sea. The government has just declared a State of Emergency, in whose upheavals four strangers--a spirited widow, a young student uprooted from his idyllic hill station, and two tailors who have fled the caste violence of their native village--will be thrust together, forced to share one cramped apartment and an uncertain future.

As the characters move from distrust to friendship and from friendship to love, A Fine Balance creates an enduring panorama of the human spirit in an inhuman state.

Enduring Beauty
5 / 5.0
I know this book will not appeal to everyone, it's tragic, but the poetry of the tale is breathtaking - you want to scream. When I finished the novel I felt sad and spent. I cared about the characters and found their fate heart-wrenching. It got to me. It's a beautiful novel, a journey, and one that I recommend over and over. Take a chance and read it.

spoilers!!!!
4 / 5.0
So sad! I cannot comment to the accuracy of life portrayed in India but the writing is compelling and the characters so fully developed, you get to know and really care about these people. They go through all kinds of ups and downs - trying to maintain a fine balance - but at the end, every single character is reduced to bitter ashes and the book actually ends with one main character stepping in front of train to end it all, as the despair has become too much even for him.

Yes, the writing is very beautiful.

Yes, the story and characters are compelling

But for it all to end in such absolute and utter misery??

Characters in A Fine Balance
4 / 5.0
Though I have yet to finish the book, I have to write a review about it. I always read reviews about books I am going to read/am already reading. All the reviews I read about A Fine Balance talked about how truthfully it portrays India and about how sad the novel is. What I love about the novel (or one of the things) is the characters. Mistry's characters, the five main ones as well as all the other ones, are all very realistic. I'm not good at writing reviews, so this is a bit difficult but I want to say that Mistry really gets human nature. All of his characters are very complex, each very different, but all extremely realistic.

On the whole, the novel is very good. A lot of Indian terms are used that I don't really know what they mean, but it adds to the authenticity of the novel and it also has encouraged me to learn their meanings on my own, rather then simply skipping over them.

I can't wait to finish the novel, but I also hope it never ends. Read it!

Honest
3 / 5.0
This is a long, well-written tale of India; but too depressing. I felt I spent too much of my time reading the 602 pages and then had to feel so awful.

So Painful
4 / 5.0
This book is very well written. Reading it was so difficult for me because of the story. The main characters were wonderful, each very endearing. But what it left me with is a heavy heart and a sense of hopelessness. It reminds me of Arundhati Roy's The God of Small Things, not because of both books taking place in India but because no one made it out unscathed. I felt that both books challenge the reader to live through the unimaginable.

It took place during the rule of Indira Ghandi in an unnamed place in India. Political corruption was unimaginable. The strong preyed upon the weak, torture and maiming were common place. I finished it a week ago and am still upset by it. It frightens me to see what politics are capable of doing to a country.

My real estate bible
5 / 5.0
Very useful book. Cover most topics in the real estate market. Highly recommended.

Some shine has warn off...
4 / 5.0
Some of the shine has worn off real estate investing lately with the credit crisis and mortgage blowouts, but still, people have to live somewhere, and , unfortunately, (or fortunately), some persons losses are other persons gains.

I think the next year or two are going to be excellent times for investing in real estate, and more specifically, detached single homes purchased for rental income. McLean and Eldred have created a fine book that guides you through the pitfalls of real estate investing with some very solid advice. It could use better information on getting statistics. While it does have some links, it needs more, because some of the information is buried deep in some websites.

The first chapter is an argument on how real estate is a better investment than stocks. The authors use averages of the stock market to determine what kind of dividend you can get on stocks. While that may sound fair, the reality is a good stock picker doesn't purchase average stocks. They purchase great stocks that are currently down. For instance, not too long ago you could have purchased Bank of America for just over $20.00, with a dividend yield of over 8 percent. Paychex was available at 3.5%. While the average yield may be 2 percent, many individual stocks are yielding between 3 and 6 percent. Then you wait for a dip in the price and pick them up between 4 and 7 percent, often giving an average portfolio of 5.5 percent. Yes, this is still lower that what you would make on a rental, but:

Then their greatest failure to understand the best method for picking stocks: you choose the stocks that have consistently increased dividends every year, year in and year out. There are many stocks that do this. They often have yearly increases well over 8 percent, many in the last fifteen years have increased over 15 percent on average. The authors expect you to be able to raise your rents 4% every year.

Given a choice between raising your cash flow 4%, or 8, 10 or 15 percent, which would you take? A single percent difference can mean hundreds of thousands of dollars lost, or gained in twenty years. A difference of five percent or more can mean millions lost or gained.

But all that aside, with the current state of the market, a lot of people are going to make a lot of money off other peoples pain. Thats unfortunate, but that is the way it is. As Baron Rothschild, an 18th century British nobleman said, "Buy when there is blood in the streets".

The possible down side is a possible glut of rental housing in some areas, notably Arizona, which already has a good supply of rental housing and currently has a high number of vacant foreclosed houses.

Monthly rents are likely to lesson (a boon for renters) as supply increases further, causing less cash flows, perhaps negative cash flows. But Arizona has a growing population, both young people and retired are moving there. The population will eventually catch up and rents will again begin to increase.

The authors reject the stock market, personally, I think a combination of investing in stocks and in real estate will give you a more balanced and safer portfolio. I think this book will definitely help you with your investment goals.

RE investing A - Z
5 / 5.0
If you are just beginning in RE investing you must get this book. It goes over all of the different types of RE investing. This book is a must have for Real Estate investors.

Very Detailed Book on Real Estate Investing
5 / 5.0
Having read the third edition of this same book, which was very good, I found this to be a more detailed and thorough revision. The way in which the information is portrayed guides the reader through the steps of investing and how to not only succeed, but to protect themselves from the failures that many novice and seasoned real estate investors fall victims to. If you want to know about investing in Real Estate, this is the book for you.

Nothing Earth Shattering
4 / 5.0
Having read a number of different real estate investing books, I am happy to report that this one is definitely above average. The author does make an effort to cover many facets (though perhaps too many?) of real estate investing. If you are looking for an introduction to real estate investing in general, this is a good place to start. If, on the other hand, you are looking for something new or different, you may want to look elsewhere. This book does a good job of hitting the basics, but it's broad coverage means that at times it is lacking in detail.

Between Chronicles and Legends, what made Raistlin aspire to godhood?

Raistlin Majere has become a Black Robe wizard and travels to Neraka, the lord city of the Dark Queen, ostensibly to work for her, though in reality he means to further his own quest for power. But Takhisis finds out that the dragon orb has entered her city and sends her draconians to find and destroy the wizard who has it in his possession. Before her agents can strike, though, Raistlin finds out that Takhisis means to take control of all wizardly magic. She has ordered Kitiara to set a trap for the Gods of Magic on the Night of the Eye, when all the high-ranking wizards will be in Neraka to celebrate.

As the forces of light, with help from the good dragons, are turning the tide of battle, Raistlin is forced to flee, for his foes are closing in on him. As the Dragon Highlords vie for the Crown of Power in the Temple of the Dark Queen, Raistlin Majere wages his own desperate battle against Takhisis in the dungeons below and meets again the brother he betrayed. The fate of the world hangs in the balance.

good "gap-filler"
4 / 5.0
some of the bad reviews here are people that just want to re-live the glory days of the original chronicles and they need to wake up. This book is a great addition to the collection and does what it's supposed to do, which is to fill in the gap of what the heck happened to raistlin when he dissappeared during the maelstrom. Yes, there were times that I felt we didn't need a history lesson of who each individual hero was, or what had happened up to that point with the war, but for newer readers, I understood the concept of helping them catchup a bit. The only section of the book I felt a little "tangled" was at the end in Neraka where the last 20 pages or so felt extremely rushed as I read the ending and was asking myself "wooooaaah, how did we get here so quickly?". All in all, a very good book though.

Largely Uneventful, Much Repetition
3 / 5.0
As a Raistlin fan, I have been waiting so long to read this. I finally got my chance and find myself disappointed. Even though the authors mention that it's best to read other dragonlance books before this, you really don't need to. There is so much repetition and information given that any dragonlance reader already knows. Many of the races and places, and the magic system and characters are described in too much depth for someone familiar with the series. I don't remember the previous two Lost Chronicles going over so much background information before getting to the story. Oh well, this is about Raistlin after all, so readers can rejoice a little bit.

The plot in Dragons of the Hourglass Mage is very simple, and if all of the filler is taken out, it's very short. Raistlin does some tasks around Neraka makes a "friend" with a female black robe, then goes through the events mentioned in other dragonlance novels. The events in the novel take place over a small period of time, and I have gained no new information from reading this. It's basically a few of events in Spring Dawning from Raistlin's point of few. I didn't like some of the pieces with Raistlin being scared, whiny, and helpless. It feels out of character to me. However, I did eat this book up very quickly and enjoyed it overall, but I was expecting so much more.

Best of the Lost Chronicles
4 / 5.0
***MILD SPOILERS***

One other reviewer mentioned several inconsistencies between Chronicles & Legends on the one hand, and Dragons of the Hourglass Mage on the other. Not having read either of the first two trilogies for some years now, these inconsistencies were not fresh in my mind, though once brought to my attention they seemed obvious (such as the fact that Raistlin did not meet Lord Soth until the Legends Trilogy, but here we see him meet Soth at an earlier date). Even so, this did not ruin the book for me, though of course I would prefer as much consistency as possible. The one thing I will say I found difficult to buy was the dissappearance of the moons on the Night of the Eye--was this mentioned in Dragons of Spring Dawning? Such a rare event would undoubtedly have been noticed and mentioned by the characters at that time, so this seems a little forced.

Negatives aside, I really enjoyed this book. Raistlin has always been my favorite DL character, and this book helped add depth to him in the vein of the Soulforge and Brothers in Arms. That said, the "humanizing" of Raistlin in this book, though expanding on the depth of his character, felt a little incongruous when considering that it took place at the same time as Dragons of Spring Dawning, when Raistlin essentially chose the path of darkness. Even so, if you love Raistlin, you'll probably enjoy this book.

Comparing it to the other two Lost Chronicles, I'll say this--I didn't care much for either of those books, though they did have thier moments. In my opinion, whatever magic MW & TH managed to capture in Chronicles & Legends became watered down by the time of Dragons of Summer Flame, and lost entirely in the War of Souls trilogy. The Lost Chronicles took a step back in the right direction, but the step was a faltering one--we get fresh stories with our favorite characters, but the dialogue didn't ring true--they had lost the magic touch in bringing them to life. This book was considerably better in that respect--probably due to the fact that the other Companions appear far less often, so there was less chance to screw them up. Raistlin & Kitiara are mercifully in-character.

My last thoughts are that it seemed a little convenient how Raistlin managed to place himself in scenes from Dragons of Spring Dawning, but even so, I enjoyed seeing those scenes from another angle. Don't get too hung up on inconsistencies, try to ignore the poor grammatical editing, and you will enjoy this book.

Insight into the most notorious character on Krynn
5 / 5.0
This is a well thought out book that fills the voids of Raistlin's adventure after he leaves his companions for dead. The most interesting thing for me is that other than "Soulforge" and "Brothers in Arms", "Dragons of the Hourglass Mage" gives us an intimate glimpse into the beautiful and sarcastic mind of the Master of Past and Present. A must read for fans of Raistlin. A great addition to the Chronicles storyline. Not really meant as a stand alone book, in fact the authors deemed it necessary to include a Prologue to get readers up to speed and recommend you to read "Dragons of Spring Dawning" before this book. The timeline of the book is rather short but one would expect it to be so to corelate the two books. I highly recommend this book.

Raistlin Returns!
5 / 5.0
Raistlin is Back in this installment of the Lost Chronicles Trilogy. We learn of his time in Neraka, why he betrayed his queen, and his accomplished power at the end of the War of the Lance. Raistlin fans must read!!

They watched Danilo Silva for days before they finally grabbed him. He was living alone, a quiet life on a shady street in Brazil; a simple life in a modest home, certainly not one of luxury. Certainly no evidence of the fortune they thought he had stolen. He was much thinner and his face had been altered. He spoke a different language, and spoke it very well. But Danilo had a past with many chapters. Four years earlier he had been Patrick Lanigan, a young partner in a prominent Biloxi law firm. He had a pretty wife, a new daughter, and a bright future. Then one cold winter night Patrick was trapped in a burning car and died a horrible death. When he was buried his casket held nothing more than his ashes. From a short distance away, Patrick watched his own burial. Then he fled. Six weeks later, a fortune was stolen from his ex-law firm's offshore account. And Patrick fled some more. But they found him.

Editorial Review
Literary slugger John Grisham returns with a story about-- surprise!--a lawyer in trouble. Patrick Lanigan had been a young partner in a prominent Southern law firm. He had a beautiful wife, a new baby girl, and a bright future. Then one winter night Patrick was trapped in a burning car; the casket they buried held nothing but ashes.

A short distance away, Patrick watched his own burial then fled. A fortune was stolen from his ex-firm's offshore account. And Patrick ran, covering his tracks the whole way.

But, now, they've found him.

A Great Read!
4 / 5.0
This wonderful book floated into my life about 2 nights ago and I just finished it. Now I need to get some sleep.

Mind-blowing legal triller! Lawyers and Lawyers!
5 / 5.0
The "Partner" is one of best books by John Grisham. If courtroom drama is something which interests you then this book is not for you. But if a legal thriller is of any interest to you then book is definitely for you! Grab it!

The story about a lawyer Danilo Silva (who real name is Patrick Lanigan ) robs his firm worth $90 millions and vanishes into the remote parts of Brazil. He is on the run and his escape to freedom comes to a halt after 4 years.

Everyone wants him - the FBI, the Sherriff of the town where he vanished, the firm from where he stole the money, the person who the money belong to, the goons hired by the insurance company etc. etc. After his capture, he is brought back to United State to face the trail of his life.

The story then takes a turn - Patrick, becomes the centerpiece and his plot becomes the focus that captures the reader's attentiveness to its minuscule detail. Patrick has been planning and plotting his every move in an event if he is ever captured. He unravels his plan with each chapter that thickens and "un-thickens" the plot. His Brazilian girlfriend (Eva Miranda, who is also a lawyer by profession) is assisting him with his "after-capture" plan. She herself is on the run - moves from city to city and country to country to avoid capture by the same people who got Patrick.

Sandy McDermott (his college buddy and a lawyer) agrees to represent him; navigates easily and shrewdly via the legal loopholes as laid out by Patrick.

The reader will be amazed by the devilish yet brilliant plan devised by Patrick to crave the path to escape after getting caught for his big time heist. The escape is shrewd intelligence. Well, lawyers!

As the reader moves along the plot he/she realizes that maybe Patrick wanted to get caught? He wanted to twist the legal system? Has an answer to every charge he is faced with? Taps into every legal loophole when the tide is against him?

The twist at the end of the book is a real jolt - or was it? This question makes the reader to think and maybe utter "wow"!

The story is entertaining, but totally unbelievable.

As on September 30, 2008 screenwriter Ann Peacock (of The Chronicles of Narnia) has been tapped to adapt the 1997 John Grisham novel The Partner.

THE PARTNER
1 / 5.0
DID NOT RECIEVE THIS BOOK YET. I ORDERED IT BUT DID NOT RECIEVE YET. IF YOU CAN CONTACT THE SENDER PLEASE HAVE THEM EMAIL ME OR SEND ME A LETTER SO I CAN SEND THEM MY CURRENT ADDRESS

Another Solid Book by Grisham
4 / 5.0
The Partner, while not as good as The Firm or The Pelican Brief, is another solid legal thriller from John Grisham. Perhaps the term "thriller", shouldn't be used for this book, as most of the book is slower-paced and involves a man who has already been arrested for murder and theft. The book was written in 1997, and there is an outdated concept that stands out in this book to the newer reader, which is mainly that people should be shocked, simply shocked at the idea that the American government would ever torture a prisoner. Sadly, this is no longer true, and the outrage over the torture of the protagonist makes the book seem a little naive and quaint to the newer reader.

If you like other John Grisham novels, this one will not disappoint, but it's not in his top five, either. Solid, not exceptional.

Thrilling but Not Worth Coming Back
3 / 5.0
This is a well-crafted suspenseful legal thriller, tempting you to devour it in one sitting. Each page turned reveals unexpected twists. But would this novel live up to the test of time? There is the inevitable question of what is left after the suspense is over? Once you finish the novel and know the ending, would you go back to it again and again and savor it like a bottle of fine wine?
